1st Decade  --  Establishment

May 3   1972     The first meeting, in the Wiri Hall, called by George Mackay and Dan Hartley to propose the formation of a freshwater angling club. Michael Beddek elected Provisional President.

July 26 1972      The inaugural meeting of Auckland Freshwater Anglers Club Inc held in the Wiri Hall.

                        The 40 persons present elected:-  President, Robert Hunter; Secretary-Treasurer, George Mackay; Committee members, Messrs Beddek, Peel, Hartley, Cunningham; Honorary Solicitor, David Lyon.

                        The initial ‘Aims’ of the club were recorded as:- Opposition to Trout farming for commercial profit, concern about forestry run-off into Waipa & other Waikato watersheds, access to Hunua catchment.

                        Subscriptions set at:-  Adult, $5; Family, $7.

Aug 30  1972     Club meetings to be held in Whitehaven Pensioner Hall, Papatoetoe.

                        Committee meetings to be held in Committee members’ residences.

1972  -  1974     John Giacon, Noel Osborne & Colin Kennedy were members of NZ Alliance of Freshwater Anglers.

May 23 1973     An Amenities Fund was established with the objective of obtaining a club hut within 2½ hour drive from Auckland.

Aug 15 1973      1st Annual General Meeting held in Whitehaven Hall, Papatoetoe. Present:- the Committee of 6 and 30 members. 8 apologies received. Michael Beddek elected Patron. Robert Hunter elected President. (resigned Nov 7 1973)  It was agreed there would be 10 club meetings/year and a newsletter produced every 3 months.

1974 – 2006      Trophy competitions period 1st July – 30th June (next), presentations at the Aug AGM.

Feb  27  1974    Brian Rolland elected Acting President.

July 24  1974     Permission was obtained from Mr Peter Kays (farmer) of Newmans Road, Waikato, to erect a hut adjacent to the Puniu River.

Aug  14 1974     2nd AGM: Brian Rolland elected President      

Sept 1   1974     1st Annual Fly Fishing Competition held at Thomsons, Parkinsons, & Muirs lakes, Waiuku.

Nov 6   1974     The first hut shifted onto site, Newmans Rd (Puniu River). Cost, $100. Photos in March 1997 Newsletter. A tender of $125 was accepted by NZR for a second hut. The hut moved to Mr Riley’s home pending a suitable site being found.

April 24 1975    Club meeting venue moved to Papatoetoe Scout Hall. President Brian Rolland granted ‘leave of absence’. Maurice Cunningham elected Acting President.

June  1975         Committee meeting venue moved to Whitehaven Hall, Papatoetoe.

Aug 13 1975      3rd AGM: Brian Frankpitt elected President, George Mackay Secretary, Brian Neilsen Treasurer,

                        Maurice Cunningham elected Honorary Life Member (died July 4 1981) 

        1975         NZ Alliance of Freshwater Anglers became NZ Federation of Freshwater Anglers (NZFFA) with John Giacon President, & Noel Osborne’s wife Eileen Secretary-Treasurer.

Feb  1976          Club has 61 paid members but concern was expressed over non-payment of other subscriptions.

Mar 1976          Working-bee held to clear ‘casting lanes’ through the weed beds at Thomsons Lake. (Waiuku)

Aug 11 1976      4th AGM:  Brian Frankpitt re-elected President.

Feb 16 1977      The Newsletter was registered with NZ Post Office.  Agreement with Mr Petty to site 2nd hut on his farm at Deans Rd, Waihi, on the Waitawheta River. (see July 19 1989)

Aug 17 1977      5th AGM:Brian Frankpitt re-elected President.   Membership subscription increased to:- Adult, $7;  Family, $10

Aug 23 1978      6th AGM:  Colin Kennedy elected President.  John Giacon elected delegate to NZRF Council.

Nov   1978        Club dinghy established at Thomsons Lake, Waiuku.  (Donated & refurbished by Noel Osborne)

April  1979        Letter to ARA stating that information had been received that fishing was taking place on the Hunua Reservoirs and that the Reservoirs should be open to all or closed to all, not open to a select few.

May  1979         Hewitt and Bale sponsoring the newsletter at $12/issue.

June  1979         First mention of an annual ‘Tackle Auction’.  Noel Osborne  volunteered to be auctioneer.

Aug 8 1979       7th AGM: Colin Kennedy re-elected President.     

June  1980         2nd boat  was obtained to be used at Muirs Lake, Waiuku.

Aug 13 1980      8th AGM: Colin Kennedy re-elected President. Founding Secretary-Treasurer George Mackay retired and was elected an Honorary Life Member. (died in England Dec 22 2009)

                        Charlie Proffit elected Secretary-Treasurer-Newsletter Editor & served for 6 years.  Subscriptions increased to:- Adult, $8; Family, $11

Feb  1981          Club meeting venue moved to Panmure School Hall.

Feb  1981          Annual Fly Casting Competition inaugurated.  Frank Perry, with a 29.9m cast, was the 1st winner of the cup and a rod jointly donated by Kellys of Rotorua and Campbell & Webster (‘The Gun Shop’) of Howick.

Aug 12 1981      9th AGM:  Ron Walters elected President. (died in Nelson April 1 2000)

Nov  1981         Frank Perry commenced fly casting tuition at Panmure School grounds on Saturday mornings, and

                        Willi Gailer was the tutor at Milford Primary School.

                        Discussion and negotiations re siting a club hut at Kai Iwi Lakes, Dargaville. (not proceeded with)

Feb  1982          The plywood dinghy at Thomsons Lake, Waiuku, replaced with a fibreglass one.

Aug 11 1982      10th AGM:  Colin Kennedy elected President. Brian Neilsen succeeded Charlie Proffit as Newsletter Editor.

                        ‘The Cortland Trophy’ donated by Douglas Johnson Ltd.

 

2nd Decade  --  Expanding  (Turangi Lodge)

Sept  1982         ‘Tisdalls Cup’ donated by W H Tisdall Ltd for annual competition for the best fishing photo.

Oct   1982         Paid-up membership rose to 180

April 1983         Newsletter format changed from ‘cyclostyled’ A4 sheets to printed A5 booklet format with a buff colour printed cover.

June  1983         Preliminary investigations for the establishment of a Club amenity in the Taupo region.

                        Purchase of metal club badges approved.

Aug 10 1983      11th AGM: Colin Kennedy re-elected President. 100 members present.

Sept  1983         AFAC Annual Literary Award competition inaugurated on the suggestion of member Mark Arnold.

                        1st entry submitted in Oct 1983 by Sam Mossman.

Nov  1983         Grey ‘T-shirts’ ($8.50) & ‘Sweatshirts’ ($20) printed with the club badge available from Richard Dobbinson.

Feb 15 1984      Maureen Doherty won both the ‘Open’ & ‘Ladies’ sections of the Annual Casting Competition.

June   1984        New Zealand Fishing News to sponsor the Annual Literary Award and provide a fly reel for the annual prize.  Entries to be judged by Editor Michael Airey.

Aug 8 1984       12th AGM: Colin Kennedy re-elected President.

Sept   1984        100 ‘overdue subscription’ notices mailed out.

                        Fly tying classes, by Roy Entwhistle & Dave Hughes, commenced at Whitehaven Hall Papatoetoe.

Feb   1985         Club boat placed at Lake Ototoa, Kaipara Peninsular.

July  1985         Fly Tying class venue moved to RSA Hall, Greenlane.

                        2 huts bought, by tender of $905, from MOW (ex NZ Electricity – Huntly power project) to form the basic structure of the proposed Turangi Lodge, to a sketch design by Clive MacDonald. 

Aug 14 1985      13th AGM: Alan Peak elected President. (died April 6 2011)

Feb    1986        Newsletter contained prospectus for issue of paid Life Memberships of $200 each and $50 non-interest-bearing repayable debentures to raise funds for the Turangi Lodge project.

Mar   1986        Section at Poihaere St Turangi purchased.

May  1986         2 huts transported to Turangi for  approx  cost of $500 being driver’s wages, overnight accommodation and twice the cost of fuel.  Clive MacDonald prepared plans for the Lodge

                           construction with a new room linking the two huts as proposed in his earlier sketch design.                

June   1986        A membership ‘Entrance Fee’ of $10 was introduced.

Aug 13 1986      14th AGM: Alan Peak re-elected President. Charlie Proffit retired as Secty-Treasurer, was re-elected Treasurer (86-87), and was elected an Honorary Life Member. (died Jan 3 2006)

                        Annual Report shows membership includes 26 paid Life Memberships and 72 Debenture holders.

Oct   1986         Dick Roundill elected an Honorary Life Member. (died Feb 20, 1992)        

Apr  1987          Turangi Lodge – first official use by members although not fully completed.

May 1987          David McLellan in NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in England. NZ 3rd.

David McLellan world dry fly champion & o/all individual 4th.

Aug 12 1987      15th AGM: Alan Peak re-elected President

Oct  1987          Introduction of ‘BLOTTO’ a monthly attendance prize-draw co-ordinated by David McLellan who    obtained donated prizes each month.

Feb   1988         President Alan Peak and Jim Foord had a promising?? meeting with the ARA Works Committee seeking approval to fish the Hunua water supply reservoirs.  (see June 1995)

Jun?  1988         David McLellan in NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in Australia.

Aug 10 1988      16th AGM: Alan Peak re-elected President. (died April 6 2011) As at June 1 1988 financial membership was 350.

                        Recommendation to the incoming committee to maintain sustained pressure on the ARA to approve fishing access to the Hunua water supply reservoirs.

May   1989        Turangi Lodge fees recorded as $10/night/member and $15/night/non-member.

June   1989        Subscriptions increased to:- Family, $30; Adult, $25; Junior, $10.

Jun?   1989        David McLellan in NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in Finland

July    1989       Club hut No.2, at Waitawheta, abandoned due to lack of use and disrepair and burned by the farmer.                                                                             Aug 9 1989       17th AGM: Scott Murray elected President.

Dec    1989        Club meeting venue moved to Remuera Intermediate School Hall for $30/night

Jun?   1990        David McLellan in NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in Wales. NZ 7th..

Aug 8 1990       18th AGM: Scott Murray re-elected President. Founding member David Lyon retires as Honorary Solicitor & elected an Honorary Life Member. Member Alan Jenkinson elected Honorary Solicitor.

Oct    1990        Committee suggest women members organise separate trips to facilitate segregated accommodation.

Nov   1990        ‘Ross Mason Memorial Trophy’ donated to club by Mrs Mason.

Feb    1991        All outstanding Debentures for Turangi Lodge have been repaid.

May  1991         Auction goods ‘passed-in’ and sale then negotiated at end of auction creating reconciliation problems so practice to be discontinued.

July   1991        AFAC club member Jim Earle, of Wiltshire England, presented to the club an Ogden Smiths Ltd

                           4-piece split-cane ‘Royal Sovereign’ rod (serial No.629) which was sealed in an acrylic case and displayed in the Turangi Lodge. (was subsequently stolen)

Aug 14 1991      19th AGM: Scott Murray re-elected President.  Approval given for extensions to the Turangi Lodge.

Nov     1991      Approx 20 club members volunteered as controllers at the 11th World Flyfishing Championships in the Rotorua area Nov.17-22 and won by the NZ team which included Willi Gailer, o/all individual 10th & largest trout,  and Richard Dobbinson o/all individual 6th.

                        A club ‘Buddy System’ was introduced to be co-ordinated by Lloyd Altham.

Feb 20  1992     Death of Honorary Life Member Dick Roundill. 

April    1992      Planned Turangi Lodge extensions costed at $20,991 considered too high. Decision to proceed deferred until 1992 AGM.

Jun 10  1992      David McLellan, Willi Gailer & Richard Dobbinson in the NZ team for the June 1992 World Flyfishing Championships in Italy.  NZ 14th.

Aug 12 1992      20th AGM: David McLellan elected President. Planned Turangi Lodge extensions not to proceed.

                        Revised and reprinted club ‘RULES’ adopted and registered with Commercial Affairs Division, Auckland.

 

3rd Decade  --- Consolidating

Oct  1992          Committee meeting venue moved to ‘Actronic’ premises, Walls Rd, Penrose. (Business premises of Committee member Doug Rankin)

Nov 1992          A Special General Meeting held to discuss a proposal to purchase or lease buildings at Lake Aniwhenua and at Ohau Channel, Rotorua.

Jun  1993          David McLellan, Richard Dobbinson and Hamish Murray in the NZ team at the 1993 World and Commonwealth Flyfishing Championships at Kamloops, Canada.  Hamish 4th in the World Individual Competition and 1st in the Commonwealth Individual Competition.  NZ 10th in the World  Champs and 2nd in the Commonwealth Champs.

Aug 11 1993      21st AGM: Doug Rankin elected President.

Sept     1993      The Club proposed establishing a ‘Youth Fishing Development Programme’.to be co-ordinated by Noel Osborne.

Mar      1994     Introduction of club night name tags to assist members and visitors to meet & talk to each other.

May     1994      Discussion regarding abandoning the Puniu Hut due to lack of use and disrepair.

Aug 10 1994      22nd AGM: Brian Hetherington elected President. Approval given to apply a $7 levy on each member, for the 1994-95 year, towards Newsletter costs.

                        Club Rules Nos 6 & 76 amended to comply with IRD

                        Membership subs year changed to:-1st Oct–30th Sep (next) to coincide with Angling Licence year.

Feb    1995        Club meeting venue moved to Ellerslie Eagles Rugby League clubrooms, Ellerslie.

Jun 1 1995        WaterCare approval for fishing the Mangatangi water reservoir from the dam wall only.

Jun?   1995        David McLellan, Hamish Murray & Denis O’Shea in the NZ team to the 1995 World and Commonwealth Flyfishing Championships in Ireland & Scotland respectively.  NZ 5th.  David McLellan 2nd  in the Commonwealth Individual Competition.

Aug 9 1995       23rd AGM: Brian Hetherington re-elected President. Club Rules Nos 7,11,33,41 amended.    

Nov   1995        Puniu Hut resited to a new position on higher ground.   Refurbishing, co-ordinated by Dave Hughes, was completed in Feb.1996. (Photos in Feb & July 1997 Newsletters)

Apr   1996         Michael Beddek retired as Club Patron.

May  1996         His Excellency The Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Hardie Boys GCMG, Governor General of New Zealand, accepted invitation to be Patron of the club during his ‘Term of Office’.

June  1996         Commencement of Derek Carter free fly tying classes.

Aug 14 1996      24th AGM: Brian Hetherington re-elected President.  Proposal to purchase ‘Dabchick’ property at Ohau Channel referred back to the incoming committee.

Nov  1996         Decision taken not to proceed with ‘Dabchick’ purchase.

Feb   1997         First meeting with WaterCare to discuss placing club boats at Mangatangi and Mangatawhiri dams.

Feb   1997         Oceania Flyfishing Championships, Rotorua Feb 19-20-21, sponsored by Freedom Air. NZ Silver team 1st,  NZ Black team 2nd.  Individual placings 3,4,5,6,9, were David McLellan, Richard Dobbinson, Denis O’Shea, Hamish Murray & John Murphy.

Aug 13 1997      25th AGM: Mike Batty elected President.  Dan Hartley elected Honorary Life Member.

                        Winners of club competitions to receive a ‘silver trout’ badge and ‘trophy fish’ (10lbs & over) winners to receive a ‘gold trout’ badge.

Sept  1997         David McLellan, Richard Dobbinson, Hamish Murray & John Murphy in the NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in USA.  NZ 16th.

Nov  1997         A 10ft aluminium (tinny) dinghy located at Thomsons Lake, Waiuku, replacing the old & crumbling fibreglass dinghy.  Photos in Dec.1997 Newsletter.     .

Feb   1998         Discussion within Committee suggesting a remit to the next AGM to amend the Club Constitution ‘Objects’ of the Club to include salt water fly fishing.  Resolved to take no action.

                        The  club ‘Newsletter’ (current Editor Dennis Horne) becomes ‘the Riffles’.           

Aug 12 1998      26th AGM: Mike Batty re-elected President.   Resolved to amend annual subscription to $30 to include all family members resident at the one address.   Junior membership to remain at $10.

                        Funding obtained from the Hillary Commission to purchase 2 boats for Mangatangi dam.

Aug    1998       Peter Scott, John Murphy in the NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in Poland. NZ 16th.

Sept   1998        WaterCare approval to commence boat fishing on Mangatangi water reservoir.

Dec    1998        David McLellan, Peter Scott & John Murphy in the NZ Silver & Black teams to the Oceania Flyfishing Championships in Australia.

Feb    1999        2 dinghys installed at Mangatangi Reservoir by Frank Ciochetto, Derek Carter & Derek Eustace. (photos in Feb & March 1999 ‘The Riffles’)

April  1999        Club meeting venue moved to the Commerce Club, Ohinerau St. Remuera.

June   1999        David McLellan & Hamish Murray in the NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in Australia and John Bell was individual 3rd in the Commonwealth Flyfishing Champs in Australia.

Aug 1 1999       AFAC, in conjunction with WaterCare Services Ltd, organised a fishing competition at Mangatangi & Mangatawhiri water reservoirs to promote angling on these dams.

Aug 11 1999      27th AGM: Mike Batty re-elected President. Club Rules Nos 42 & 49 amended.

Nov 21 1999      A wader safety class was conducted at the Papatoetoe centennial Pool complex by Derek Carter, Frank Ciochetto & Derek Eustace.

March  2000      ‘Club introduction’ cards available for members to give to prospective new club members.

Mar 12 2000      Long-standing club member Maureen Doherty died suddenly.  Since moving to Rotorua in the 1990’s Maureen wrote a regular ‘Rotorua Round-up’ column for ‘The Riffles’.

March  2000      David McLellan and John Bell in the NZ Silver team to the Oceania Flyfishing Championships in New Zealand.  NZ 2nd.

April    2000      Ron Walters, Club President 1981-82, died in Nelson.

May 3  2000      Venue of fly tying classes (May-Nov) tutored by Derek Carter, Frank Ciochetto & Derek Eustace moved to Whitehaven Hall, Papatoetoe.

June     2000      Club vests, sleeve-less sage-green polar-fleece, with embroidered Club Logo available for $49.95

June     2000      David McLellan in the NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in England.  NZ 9th.

July     2000      Club meeting venue moved to Panmure Yacht and Boating Club, Kings Rd. Panmure, with a necessary club night change from Wednesday to Monday.

Aug 14 2000      28th AGM: Virginia Duncum elected President.

Nov      2000     Club purchased 2 float tubes complete with flippers for hire to members @ $10 each /day plus a $50 refundable deposit.

April     2001     Mike Batty, AFAC Immediate Past-President, elected to the North Island Executive of the NZ

                        Federation of Freshwater Anglers. (NZFFA)

May 20 2001     Another wader safety class conducted at the Papatoetoe Centennial Pool complex by Derek Carter, Frank Ciochetto & Derek Eustace.

June  2001         Retiring Governor General of NZ, His Excellency The Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Hardie Boys GCMG, confirmed he is willing to continue as the Club Patron.

June  2001         Peter Scott in the NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in Sweden.  NZ 12th.

John Murphy selected to represent NZ at the World Saltwater Flyfishing Championships in Florida, USA, gaining 2nd place.

Aug 13 2001      29th AGM: Virginia Duncum re-elected President.

Mar 9  2002       AFAC & Trout Unlimited combined working bee clearing around previous tree plantings on the Wairoa River banks up-stream from Clevedon.

April   2002       Commencement of the ‘SureStrike Tackle’ sponsored monthly ‘Fly Tying Challenge’ competition co-ordinated by Hugh Hutchinson. (see March 2009)

July 8  2002      Extraordinary General Meeting to elect Derek Carter, Frank Ciochetto, Derek Eustace, Willi Gailer, (died Jan 2005) Neil Hirtzel & Noel Osborne as Honorary Life Members.

Aug 12 2002      30th AGM: Ian Gibbs elected President.

 

4th Decade  --  Maturing

Nov   2002        Committee considering:-

                        Establishing AFAC annual coaching clinics, at the  Puniu River club hut,  for beginner anglers.

                        Establishing a ‘Development Squad’ to encourage club members to compete in the SFFNZ Regional & National competitions for selection of the NZ teams for the annual World, Commonwealth and Oceania Flyfishing Championships.

Nov   2002        President Ian Gibbs in one of the 2 NZ teams for the Oceania Flyfishing Championships in Tasmania, Australia.  NZ teams 3rd & 5th.

April  2003        Ron Gill won the ‘Columbia Sportswear’ Kahawai World Saltwater Flyfishing Championship.

June   2003        President Ian Gibbs in the NZ team to the World Flyfishing Championships in Spain. NZ 10th.

July 27 2003      Another wader safety class conducted at the Papatoetoe Centennial Pool Complex by Derek Carter, Frank Ciochetto & Derek Eustace.

Aug 11 2003      31st AGM: Ian Gibbs re-elected President.  Chris Christiansen and George Lammie elected Honorary Life Members.

March 2004       Brendan Lyon succeeds Hugh Hutchinson as co-ordinator of the SureStrike Fly Tying Challenge.

April   2004       Ian Rodger succeeds AFAC Past-President Mike Batty on the North Island Executive of NZFFA

                        and in October 2004 was appointed Acting President until April 2007 when he was elected President

                        and served 3 years, until a ‘constitutional retirement’ in April 2010, then remaining on the Executive

                        as Immediate Past President.   

June    2004       President Ian Gibbs in the NZ Team to the World Flyfishing Championships in Slovakia. NZ 11th.

Aug 9  2004      32nd AGM: Ian Gibbs re-elected President.   Brian Hetherington elected Honorary Life Member.

Jan      2005      Death of Honorary Life Member Willi Gailer.

Feb     2005       Club lodge at Poihaere St Turangi sold and a 3 bedroom house at 3 Te Hei Place Turangi purchased.

March 2005       President Ian Gibbs & John Bell in the winning NZ Black team at the 2005 Oceania Flyfishing Championships at Lake Aniwhenua & the Waihou, Waimakariri & Ohinemuri Rivers.

Peter Scott & Neil Hirtzel in the 3rd placed NZ Silver team.

April  2005        David Kennedy, Brendan Lyon & Belinda Thomas new tutors of the fly tying classes.

Aug 8 2005       33rd AGM: Hugh Hutchinson elected President.

Sept   2005        The 2 dinghys removed from Mangatangi reservoir & are to be sold by tender.

Oct    2005        Derek Eustace succeeds Brendan Lyon as co-ordinator of the SureStrike Fly Tying Challenge.

Jan 3  2006        Death of Honorary Life Member Charlie Proffit.

March 2006       President Hugh Hutchinson donated the PRESIDENT’S CUP for annual competition for a mystery weight trout,  and an existing unused trophy was designated the MARINERS TROPHY for annual competition for the heaviest trout caught while boat fishing.

                        Club Trophy competitions period changed to 1st November – 31st October (next), presentations at the December club night.  

May  2006         Planned work at the Turangi house includes the bathroom, a drying room & a fish-cleaning bench.

June  2006         Peter Scott, Neil Hirtzel & Craig Farrar fill 3 of the 5 places in the NZ team for the 2006 World Flyfishing Championships in Portugal. NZ 13th of 21 teams.  Then on to Wales for the Commonwealth Championships.

Aug 14 2006      34th AGM: Hugh Hutchinson re-elected President.  Arthur Golding elected Honorary Life Member.

                        Subscriptions set at:- Adults $40, entrance fee $25; Family $60, entrance fee $35; Juniors $10.

Sept  2006         Mike Barke, monthly trips convenor, initiates a new trips format to include in the trip cost Saturday BBQ breakfast & dinner and Sunday BBQ breakfast.  

Mar  2007         Neil Hirtzel, Kiyoshi Nakagawa & Garth Plank in the NZ Gold Medal winning team at the Oceania Flyfishing Championships in Tasmania, Australia.

July  2007         Frank Ciochetto & Derek Eustace  resume as tutors of the fly tying classes.

Sep  2007          Club members Peter Scott & Kiyoshi Nakagawa, in partnership with Paul Dewar, open fishing tackle shop ROD & REEL in Newmarket.

Mar  2008         The Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Hardie Boys GNZM, GCMG, QSO retires as Club Patron.

Mar  2008         Neil Hirtzel in the 2nd place-winning NZ team in the World Flyfishing Championships held in the Rotorua area and Ian Gibbs, Kay Stanbury, Peter Scott, David Pirrit,John Murphy, Brendan Lyon & Colin Shepherd were key members of the organizing team.

March  2008      Commonwealth Flyfishing Championships in the Rotorua area:-  Ian Gibbs in the 3rd placed NZ Silver team, and Neil Hirtzel, Garth Plank, & Peter Scott in the 6th placed NZ Black team.

April    2008      Selwyn Hodder elected Secretary of NZFFA and re-elected in April 2011.

Aug 11 2008      36th AGM: Doug Snell elected President.

Feb   2009         Kiyoshi Nakagawa gained 2nd place in the National Flyfishing Championships on the Waihou River.

March  2009      Interior redecorating completed in the kitchen, dining & hall areas of the Turangi house  as part of on-going refurbishment plans and significant reconstruction of exterior landscaping has begun.

March  2009      Oceania Flyfishing Championships in the Ruapehu District:- Peter Scott & Kiyoshi Nakagawa in the New Zealand Silver team, 1st place, and Neil Hirtzel, Garth Plank, Brendan Lyon & Mark Clasper in the NZ Black team, 3rd place.

March  2009      ROD & REEL succeed SureStrike Tackle Ltd as sponsors of the  Fly Tying Challenge.

Aug 10 2009      37th AGM: Doug Snell re-elected President.

Aug      2009     Old (2003) club web-site www.afac.org.nz  redesigned and updated.          

Oct 11  2009      Inaugural interclub fly fishing competition, on Lake Pupuke, between AFAC & North Shore Fly Fishers (for the ‘AFAC Vs NSFF Inter-club Trophy’) to support the ‘Casting for Recovery’ organization.

Dec 22 2009      Death in England of Club Co-founder & Honorary Life Member George Mackay.

Mar 19  2010     At the National Flyfishing Championships at Lake Kuratau and Waihou River club members were placed:- Kiyoshi Nakagawa 1st, Peter Scott 4th, Neil Hirtzel 5th, Garth Plank 6th, Peter Chan 7th, Brendan Lyon 12th, Johannes Krill 14th.

June  2010          Peter Scott was in the ‘NZ Silver Flies’ team at the 2010 World Flyfishing Championships in Poland, NZ 8th of 25 teams, and Neil Hirtzel was Captain & Reserve in the team for the Commonwealth Championships in Wales, NZ 8th,  and won the Silver Medal in individual competition.

Aug 9 2010       38th AGM: Doug Snell re-elected President.   Puniu club hut has been repaired & repainted.

                        Subscriptions set at:- Adults $45, entrance fee $25; Family $65, entrance fee $35; Junior $10.

Sep    2010        Last printed & posted-out issue of ‘The Riffles’ in A5 page-size format. Future editions will be viewable on the Club web-site and A4 page-size printed copies posted only to members not ‘on-line’.

Nov 6/7 2010     Peter Chan (partnered with Aaron West) won 1st place in the 2010, ‘Manic Tackle’ sponsored, National Pairs competition on Lake Rotoaira.  Tim Rich & Chris Young took the ‘Best New-Comers’ prize.

Apr 6  2011       Death, in Havelock North, of Past President (1985-1989) Alan Peak.          

April   2011       Turangi house exterior renovation work completed.
